Yay! Summertime’s here which means it’s time for kids to have extra fun in the sun! But the hot weather also means they get thirsty more quickly, which is why it’s important to remind your little ones to drink lots of water to keep them hydrated.

Being well-hydrated improves mood, memory and attention in children. Water also helps keep their joints, bones and teeth healthy so that they can grow up strong!

As a guide, here are some recommendations on water intake for children. Your child may need more if they’ve been active in sports or other strenuous activities, and the weather is hot and humid. The best way is to offer drinks regularly throughout the day.

Tips for hydration summer

To encourage your child to drink more, you can also try making some of these easy Oddbods-inspired thirst quenchers. Let’s keep ourselves and our children hydrated, especially during summer!

Jeff’s Easy as ABC Juice

“ABC” stands for apple, beetroot and carrot, and together they make a potent combination of nutrients and health benefits for kids and adults alike. Jeff loves his ABC Juice because it’s thirst-quenching on a hot day and also wonderful for his eyes, teeth, tummy and immune system!

The trick to making a delicious glass of ABC juice that kids will savour is to balance out the strong taste of beetroot with natural sweeteners. This is why we also include pineapple chunks to sweeten the drink and for an extra Vitamin C boost.

Ingredients

  • ½ beetroot, peeled and chopped
  • 2 apples, cored and chopped
  • 3 carrots, peeled and chopped
  • ½ cup of pineapple chunks

Method

  1. If using a juicer, pass the ingredients in this order: beetroot, apples, carrots and pineapple chunks.
  2. If using a blender, blend the ingredients together with ¾ cups (175ml) of water. Strain the pulp through a fine-mesh strainer or a jelly strainer bag. Serve the juice and discard the pulp.

Slick loves being cool, and nothing keeps him cooler on a hot summer day than an orange electrolyte drink! Electrolytes are minerals that conduct electricity when dissolved in water. It may sound odd, but they’re really good for our bodies because their electrical energy helps facilitate important bodily functions.

They’re super hydrating as well, and make an excellent concoction to give your child on an exceptionally warm day or if they’re dehydrated from illnesses such as vomiting and diarrhoea. Try his favourite summer drink recipe, which contains plenty of beneficial electrolytes from the orange, lemon, salt and honey.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (500ml) water
  • ¾ cup (175ml) fresh orange juice
  • ¼ cup (58ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp (30g) honey
  • A pinch of Himalayan salt

Method

  1. Add all ingredients into a jug and stir well until salt has dissolved.
  2. Serve and enjoy!
