Is your little one eating their five-a-day? Yes, we know it’s hard! You’re not the first parent who struggles to get a picky eater to eat more fruit. The top excuses for children not eating their fruit and veg include not liking the taste, the texture or the smell.

But that doesn’t have to be the case. Picky eaters with sensory food aversions tend to love the complex texture of frozen fruits, for example. Freezing fruits in smoothies is a pop-ular idea, too – like these popsicles!

Did you know each colour of fruit and veg provides different health benefits? So keep the colours varied in your kid’s diet!

Time to pep up your popsicles with some fun, Oddbods-inspired recipes – yummy fruity combos filled with natural sweetness and nutrients. Every lick is a flavour-packed adventure that’ll help boost kids’ hydration this summer!

Newt’s Berry Sweet n’ Sneaky Popsicle

This popsicle provides a healthy boost of nutrients for your child.

Yes, you read that right – it’s a sneaky popsicle because we’re adding some baby spinach into the popsicle – and your child won’t know it! Like our cute Newt, it’s pink and sweet, but with hidden depths.

Dark, leafy greens like spinach have big doses of nutrients, blend well, and have mild flavours. Moreover, the freshly squeezed orange juice and triple berries that we’re using (strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries) are rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, fibre, and more!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (150 g) frozen strawberries
  • 1 cup (190 g) frozen blueberries
  • 1 cup (125 g) frozen raspberries
  • 1 cup (30 g) baby spinach
  • 1 cup (240 ml) freshly squeezed orange juice
  • ¾ to 1 cup water, as needed

Method (makes about 10 popsicles):

  1. Puree all ingredients in a blender until completely smooth.
  2. Pour into popsicle moulds and freeze for 4 to 5 hours, until fully solid.
  3. Carefully remove from mould and enjoy!

Pogo’s Cheeky Tomato Watermelon Popsicle

Does your child dislike tomatoes? This popsicle might just make them love it.

We’re being a little cheeky squeezing tomatoes into this icy concoction! After all, tomatoes are technically a fruit! This kid-friendly version of a frozen summer cocktail takes it up a healthier notch by using fresh, homemade tomato juice.

Many children love ketchup and pizza but often have the sauciest distaste for raw tomatoes because of their texture. Incorporating fresh tomatoes into popsicles might just be the best solution for them to enjoy the nutrients. A sweet and healthy popsicle prank, you could say!

Ingredients:

  • 3 heaped cups (460 g) watermelon, cubed
  • 3 cups freshly squeezed tomato juice, or 3 large tomatoes
  • Juice of 1 lime

Method (makes about 10 popsicles):

  1. Puree all ingredients in a blender until completely smooth.
  2. Using a strainer, pour the mixture into popsicle moulds and freeze for 3 to 4 hours, until fully solid.
  3. Carefully remove from mould and enjoy!
